Abstract

One must acknowledge that outcomes for many individuals with learning disabilities are far from satisfactory, to themselves, their families, their schools, and society. Yet, we rejoice in recognizing individuals with learning disabilities who show their resilience, who demonstrate success against the odds (Werner, 1993). Weare proud to hold up such historic luminaries as Thomas Edison, Woodrow Wilson, Hans Christian Anderson, and even Leonardo da Vinci (Aaron, Phillips, & Larsen, 1988) and more contemporary individuals such as Bruce Jenner and Cher. Our recognition that some persons with learning disabilities rise to success in spite of (or because of?) their learning difficulties means we simultaneously question how they were able to do it.
