Abstract

Students attend graduate school for many reasons including job advancement and changing careers. They want to earn a credential; gain new skills, knowledge, and competences; and network with professionals in the field that will lead to a better, more challenging, or more fulfilling job. At the same time, faculty members have various goals for students. Program priorities and accrediting body requirements dictate some of these. Others are focused specifically on lifelong learning competencies, such fostering critical thinking skills and the appreciation for learning, essential to creating a resilient and flexible workforce capable of meeting the evolving needs of global society successfully (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 2012).
